King
Hello, my name is King. My animal id is #222016. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/8/2025.
King has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He has a severe ear disease that may need surgical intervention. We are trying to treat him medically, but the anti-inflammatory medication may not work and has unwanted side effects. He needs care and attention that we cannot provide. During an interaction with a potential foster, King became aroused and jumped up, grabbing one of the potential foster's jacket and pulling on it until it ripped off. Before this King was reported to have a loose body and was playing with tennis balls and was receptive to pets.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Request for behavioral psychopharm following an incident that occurred a few days ago. King had interaction with a family and jumped up to reach something in the hand of a child as they were picked up by their parent. An employee/handler grabbed King's collar to pull him down off the parent. On the way down he grabbed the pocket of the parent's jacket and tugged until it ripped off. In this situation, increased arousal around multiple new people is not unexpected. As this was a single episode with no prior behavioral concerns, I do not recommend behavioral psychopharm at this time.

Summary:: Due to King entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 03/16/25 King is introduced face to face to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. King will approach the gate initially perked up, appearing bigger with a neutral frame, immediately spreading his scent, showing signs of sexual motivation. King is moved back into the pen allowing the greeter dog inside to greet him face-to-face. King's handler will walk him around as the other handler with the greeter dog will do the same. They will then meet in the middle, sniffing each other's genitals. King will then attempt to transition into a mount but is corrected by the handler as they move him away. Once King's intentions are clear, the two are separated. King is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 03/13/25 King is introduced to at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. King will approach the gate to greet the novel female dog but she doesn't approach. King remains loose and wiggly, toe-tapping in front of the gate. He displays a high flagging tail while salivating, displaying signs of sexual motivation. He remains self-present as she ignores him, eventually walking away on his own, remaining soft. King is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. ** Due to a high level of ear discomfort, a face-to-face greet is not conducted. **
Summary (7):: 3/22: King was brought out to the play yard for an interaction. King was brought out to the play yard and placed on a drag leash, the family was already in the yard when he arrived. King was mostly aloof, playing with balls someone previously left in the yard. When he did step away from the toys, staff member who was handling the interaction, managed to take them and put them away so he could focus on interacting with the family. King was receptive to pets and was very friendly the entire time, no hackles raised and maintaining a very loose wiggly body. The family had two children, one who was a toddler and another in a stroller. The daughter had some type of object in her hand that the mother had given her, and once King noticed her waving this item, he approached her. The father had picked her up before King had attempted to jump up. Once King jumped, the staff member grabbed his martingale collar to ease him back to the ground and prevent him from attempting this again. On his way down, he managed to grab the father's jacket pocket, and proceeded to 'tug' until it ripped off. Two other handlers were in the next yard, so the staff member called for assistance. One leashed King up on a slip lead, as the staff member then took off the drag leash, and King was escorted back. 03/16/25 (playgroup): King is lying at the back of kennel with a soft frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and walks on a loose lead to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). King spends time scenting and exploring the space and will readily approach when handlers call to him. He accepts petting with a soft frame. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely. 03/14/25 (assessment): King is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He shakes his head lightly as he is leashed and walks with a loose frame to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). King is a bit aloof and will wander around the room, ignoring handlers. Handlers use squeeze cheese to collar King, and he is free to explore the space. He maintains a neutral frame throughout his time in the room and will intermittently shake his head. After assessment, he is leashed with ease and returns to kennel safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the concerning level of arousal during an adoption interaction and lack of behavioral history due to being surrendered as a stray, we recommend for King to be placed in an adult-only home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/ Mouthiness/Low threshold for arousal: King was observed to become aroused during an adoption interaction, latching onto one of the potential adopter's jacket pockets until it ripped. He maintained a loose and wiggly body but was not able to settle. The potential adopter had picked up their child prior to him jumping up and grabbing their pocket, but otherwise there is a lack of clear trigger. Please see handout on Arousal, Basic manners/poor impulse control, and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition.
