At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Duke Of York

Duke of York is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Twistyfig

Twistyfig is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of boredom and frustration. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Mickey is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with under socialized cats and helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Buddy Bori has been placed on the At Risk list for medical reasons. His clinical signs and diagnostics support a problem with his prostate. He needs care and attention that we cannot provide.

Murph

Murph is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Murph exhibits extremely high arousal in the care center, repeatedly jumping, spinning, and screeching in his kennel, and lunging toward other dogs in the care center as well as on walks. On occasions, he has escalated to grabbing handlers clothing, and during a interaction he made contact with a handler’s forearm and hand, leaving bruising and teeth marks but not breaking skin. Murph continues to display intense jumping, impulsive mouthing, and difficulty settling in the care center, though he can participate in training with staff readily if his arousal is maintained. Medically, Murph is apparently healthy.

Midnight Oreo

Midnight Oreo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Midnight Oreo returned to the Care Center as a stray with limited history. Upon his return Midnight Oreo was noted to be hard barking at dogs and showing early signs of arousal concerns by jumping on staff and leash biting. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Midnight Oreo has continued to show concerning levels of on-leash reactivity to both dogs and people. At times Midnight Oreo has been observed to pull toward, stare and hard bark at both people and dogs on the street and is not consistently able to be redirected. Midnight Oreo has also been reported to be anxious, high-pitch vocalizing during his handling assessment and at times in kennel. With select staff, Midnight Oreo has become social, treat motivated and allows petting. Medically, Midnight Oreo is apparently healthy.

Ace

Ace is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Ace has displayed escalating dog reactivity in the care center, including hard barking, lunging, and pulling with significant force when seeing other dogs during walks and while returning to his kennel. He becomes tense with raised hackles and fixates on other dogs, showing little interest in treats or toys once aroused. Ace has also displayed discomfort during his handling assessment when trying to pet him. Medically, Ace is apparently healthy.

Zeuski

Zeuski is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Zeuski been struggling to acclimate in the care center and has been highly anxious, repeatedly mounting handlers during walks and mouthing clothing and arms when attempts are made to interrupt the behavior. He has ignored attempts to refocus during these incidents and required assistance from additional staff, During interactions he becomes tense, paces, and seeks exit. Medically, Zeuski has moderate external otitis.

Prince

Prince is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Prince is a senior cat with comorbidities. He was diagnosed with a heart murmur, periodontal disease, otitis, and cystomatosis at intake. More recently, he has been diagnosed with a URI and has had a poor appetite that hasn't responded significantly to supportive care. Prince will need ongoing treatment until his URI has resolved and his appetite has improved, he will also need follow up veterinary care for his other medical issues. Behaviorally, Prince is fearful, but has tolerated medical handling.

Anabelle

Anabelle is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Anabelle has been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and is on insulin twice daily. Diabetes is difficult to regular in shelter and Anabelle will require follow-up visits (as well as regular monitoring visits) with a veterinarian. Diabetes is most often a life long condition in cats. Anabelle has allowed medical handling in shelter.

Sargento

Sargento is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Sargento has been highly social with staff and handlers. But he has displayed high arousal and reactivity in the care center, including barking at the front of his kennel, leash biting and tugging, lunging toward nearby kennels, and kennel fighting while being moved, making him difficult to redirect once reacting and to safely handle at times. Medically, Sargento is apparently healthy.

Peanut Butter

Peanut Butter is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Peanut Butter has shown significant fear and sensitivity during handling assessments, initially approaching for treats but quickly flinching, cowering, and moving away in response to fast movements or proximity of handlers. He does not tolerate touch, displays skin rippling when petted, and starts to pace and practice avoidance when overwhelmed. Due to his level of fear, handling assessments have been able to be completed Medically, Peanut Butter is emaciated.

Siren

Siren is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Siren has displayed kennel stress in the care center, repeatedly hard barking, baring teeth, lunging, and striking the kennel glass when staff or other dogs pass by, despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Medically, Siren is Overweight.

Tyrone

Crate or Built-in, ONLY dog due to noted reactivity. -AR Tyrone is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Tyrone arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. During his handling assessment Tyrone was noted be social with staff and allow all petting. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Tyrone his been showing signs of deterioration and reactivity to dogs. Tyrone has been reported to be growling with tense body when he sees dogs on walks and when dogs pass his kennel or crate. Tyrone has also been observed to intensely bite and muzzle punch his kennel bars. Tyrone continues to be social with staff and treat motivated. Medically, Tyrone is noted have a cherry eye but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Froyo

Froyo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Froyo arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake, Froyo was noted to be loose bodied, social, and allow all handling. However, Froyo has been showing concerning levels of on-leash reactivity. Froyo has been observed to pull hard toward occupied kennels, and vocalize towards dogs on walks. Additionally, Froyo has been noted to pull-hard, lunge, and vocalize towards people passing by on walks. When in play-yards, Froyo has been social with staff, highly treat motivated for basic commands, and is more easily redirected when showing reactivity. Medically, Froyo is apparently healthy.

Dottie

Dottie is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Throughout her stay Dottie has warmed up to handlers. Recently, Dottie has been showing a decreasing threshold for arousal by persistently leash biting with escalating intensity. This behavior is difficult to redirect using treats, toys, or squeaker sounds. When not over threshold, Dottie continues social with handlers and allow all petting. Medically, Dottie has otitis externa but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Barker T

Barker T is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Barker T has demonstrated high arousal and difficulty regulating his behavior during handling assessment attempts, including pulling hard on leash, repeatedly jumping onto handlers, jumping toward shoulder and face level. He has shown a flushed face, heavy panting, and difficult refocusing while aroused, resulting in multiple handling assessments being discontinued. Medically, Barker T is apparently healthy.

Zeke

Zeke is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Zeke has not been acclimating well in the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable, including repeatedly jumping and spinning off his kennel walls and pulling hard toward neighboring kennels. During interactions he paces, pants, and has difficulty settling, though he can briefly engage with enrichment and handlers for treats. Medically, Zeke is apparently healthy.

Joey

Joey is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Joey has displayed escalating reactivity in the care center, including hard barking and lunging toward dogs and barking at strangers. While he can be loose, social with familiar handlers, he becomes over aroused around other people and dogs, struggling to focus, jumping on handlers, and vocalizing persistently. Medically, Joey is apparently healthy.

Dilal

Dilal is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is a gentle senior dog with hematuria, prostatic cysts and a heart murmur. He needs to be neutered and have his prostate tracked after surgery with ultrasound to treat his condition.

Rocky Barkboa

Rocky Barkboa is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Rocky arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender due to housing insecurity. Upon intake Rocky Barkboa was noted to be social with staff and treat motivated. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Rocky Barkboa has been reported to be highly rope and dog reactive. Noted to jump up, bite, and tug on the leash in kennel and while out on walks. During one instance while biting the leash, Rocky lunged towards the handler and bit the handler on the leg. This bite did not result in broken skin. Rocky has also been observed to lunge and snap towards other dogs in kennels and crates. In kennel, Rocky is receptive to high value treats; when outside on walks he remains social with staff. Medically, Rocky has CIRDC.

Chewy

Chewy is on the at-risk list due to behavioral reasons. Chewy arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender, his previous owner describes him as playful and outgoing. Chewy has been showing a low-threshold for arousal during his stay. He has been observed to be persistently jump up on handlers and towards the handlers face while on leash. He has also been obsvered to jump up and bite the leash. While with handlers Chewy is receptive to treats. Medically, Chewy is apparently healthy.

Koda

Koda is on the at-risk list due to behavioral reasons. Koda's previous owner states that he is on leash reactive and will resource guard his bowl, or any food object in his presence. His previous owner states that he will lunge towards dogs and cats while on leash. When in possession of food Koda will hard bark, snap, or growl. During his stay in care Koda has been obsvered to be reactive on leash and have a low threshold for arousal. Koda is noted to lunge towards a handler while on leash. During one of his assessment Koda was obsvered to attempt to mount handlers and head whip back and forth with an open mouth while vocalizing. While out of kennel Koda will have a loose and wiggly body and is social with handlers.
